Detroit Walk for Choice
It’s on.

Your next Walk for Choice will be May 21st, exact time and starting point TBA. We’re doing a Detroit walk this time, and hoping to get folks to carpool out from Ann Arbor.

Spread the word!!

Coming soon: SlutWalk

angibs:

We are going to do one of these in MI. And it is going to be badass.

Seriously, this victim-blaming nonsense has got to stop. Because we can talk about ending sexual violence as much as we want, but until we really dismantle this rape culture we live in, we’re not going to get very far. And slut-shaming and victim-blaming are a *huge* part of upholding that rape culture.

So, yes: SlutWalk. Stay tuned.

walkforchoice:

“The reason Social Security is in big trouble is we don’t have enough workers to support all the retirees. Well, a third of all the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion, because one in three pregnancies end in abortion.”

GOP presidential…

Remember when Catholic Vote tried to “expose” everyone at Walk for Choice as baby-eating radicals? Well, Angi in Detroit did a little remix of their video!

The public debate over choice versus life is a dangerous misrepresentation of the very real struggle that millions of women face every day to maintain sovereignty over their own bodies. There is an insidious notion that persists which asserts that anyone who chooses…

This is an amazing project. I was just saying the other day that abortion is unfortunately so rarely something we hear open, honest accounts of, even amongst groups of women away from “public” view. I think that says a lot about the kind of shame that’s still attached to the experience. Only this kind of storytelling has the power to change that shame.

Walk for Choice goes to Lansing?

For those of you not on the facebook, I just posted this request for input:

Hey friends! I think it’s really important that we all start thinking about ways to rally and protest all the anti-choice legislation currently under consideration in our state. It would be awesome to see people heading to Lansing during some of the big protests with pro-choice signs, ready to talk about these issues, perhaps distributing literature about what’s goin’ on… Thoughts?

So, like the post says… it would be great to hear your thoughts! I’m not planning on being able to put together anything incredibly organized just yet, but I think it’s important for us to begin having a presence during the protesting that’s going on. There’s a big protest planned for April 4th, and even if just a handful of people show up with pro-choice signs, ready to spread the word about some of the legislation we’re currently facing, we could possibly begin to draw attention and support. What does everyone think about that?

Thanks for sticking with us!

Though I’m not sure how many people made their way to Ann Arbor due to Detroit Walk for Choice today, there was a great turnout for the Planned Parenthood rally and the following Walk for Choice there. We apologize again for the rearranging of the event that happened at the last minute, but we wanted to all stand together rather than putting people in the position of feeling conflicted between two events they wanted to attend. Hopefully, a lot of you from Detroit were able to join us today!

Much as we all love Planned Parenthood, however, one thing that really struck me today was how centered the event was on their federal funding. Which is a huge, huge deal, and something we all need to be talking about. But I think we also all need to be talking about the frightening amount of antichoice legislation currently up for consideration in our frighteningly antichoice state House and Senate. We’ve fought and will continue fighting to ensure that PP continues to receive the funding they so desperately need and deserve. But as essential as they are, our access to reproductive choices does not begin and end with Planned Parenthood. Let’s all remember as we stand with them and support them that there are also a whole mess of other scary things happening right now here in MI and around the country. Let’s make sure we fight to keep Planned Parenthood funded and fight all of these other things that have the potential to limit our freedom, too—bills that would grant personhood to fetuses, that would mandate women to view ultrasounds before receiving an abortion, that would prohibit state health insurance from covering abortion procedures. We can’t afford to pick and choose between these battles, we have to fight them all.

Our plans for the coming months are tentative right now, but there’s talk of taking a bit of time off, and scheduling another walk in May or June. But there are definitely more walks coming, because as long as the assaults on our autonomy continue, we need to continue standing up and speaking out. Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted.

There is no freedom without reproductive freedom.

Solidarity,

Angi

Important Announcement About Tomorrow’s Walk!!

Dear everyone: Due to the large amount of interest in the PP rally happening in Ann Arbor tomorrow and the feedback we’ve received, we’ve been in contact with an organizer from the Ann Arbor walk, and the official plan is for folks from Detroit to arrange a carpool to Ann Arbor and join in that walk. We hope you’ll all wear your orange and participate in the Ann Arbor Walk for Choice! Please feel free to use our facebook event page or the notes section here to get in touch with others and make carpool plans. And of course if some people still want to make plans to meet up in a small group and walk in Detroit, they’re welcome to do so!

In the future, there’s been tentative talk about alternating months between walking in Ann Arbor and walking in Detroit, which could be a great way to bring everyone together while still having a presence in both cities. We want to be united for reproductive justice, not to feel like our events are in any way competing with each other.

For now, our apologies for the last minute change of plans! Please spread the word to anyone you know is planning on attending! And thanks for sticking with us while we figure this all out—Detroit Walk For Choice is definitely not stopping, just relocating for this month!
